In a historic event for the immigrant community in the United States, two states, Washington and Illinois, have implemented new laws that facilitate access to new driver’s licenses for immigrants. This measure represents a significant step towards inclusion and road safety for thousands of immigrants residing in these states.
The new law in Washington eliminates the social security number barrier as a requirement to obtain professional driver’s licenses. This means that undocumented immigrants who meet the requirements will be able to access licenses that will allow them to work in jobs such as taxi driver, school bus driver or truck driver.
To obtain a professional license, undocumented immigrants in Washington must present a valid tax identification number, pass a driving test, and demonstrate safe driving skills.
The new law in Illinois replaces the Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL) with a standard four-year driver’s license for undocumented residents. This license will serve as a valid form of identification and will allow immigrants to drive with greater safety and peace of mind.
To obtain a standard license in Illinois, undocumented immigrants must present a valid identification document, pass a driving test, have valid auto insurance, and demonstrate at least one year of residency in the state.
Restrictions on use: The new licenses for immigrants in both states cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter federal government buildings that require REAL ID identification.
Positive impact on the community
Despite these restrictions, the new laws represent a fundamental advance for the immigrant community, giving them greater access to identification and the ability to drive legally and safely.
The new immigrant driver’s license laws in Washington and Illinois are an important step toward a more just and inclusive future for all residents of these states. These measures represent progress in the fight for the rights of the immigrant community and set a precedent that could be followed by other states in the country.
